Ingress Protection (IEC 60529/IP Code) Testing

Ingress Protection testing, as per IEC 60529 (or the IP Code/IP Rating) measures the susceptibility of a component to both the ingress of solid particles (sand or dust) and water.

We help evaluate your products for foreign object, dust and water against the IEC 60529 standard for ingress protection.

Ingress Protection testing evaluates the resistance to particle and liquid entry for an enclosed product. After testing has been performed, the product receives an IP rating, based on IEC 60529, according to the achieved resistance to solid particles and liquids. NEMA testing issues type ratings which carry a number of enclosure requirements, supplementary to solid and liquid ingress. EMTS specializes in all testing required for IP & NEMA type ratings.

What is IEC 60529?

The IP Code, or Ingress Protection Code is defined in IEC standard 60529 which classifies and rates the degree of protection provided by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures against intrusion, dust, accidental contact, and water. It is published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The equivalent European standard is EN 60529.

Why do manufacturers conduct ingress testing?

Product failures in the sector affect any manufacturer or supplier, which often jeopardize the operation of the product and cause consumer dissatisfaction, but can also lead to costly malfunction studies and the need to rebuild the device. Such considerations add more time and resources costs by reworking the product mostly on design process, process technology modifications, new machining and reprogramming of mass production equipment, and even the need for a device revision if it requires third-party validations.

How can EMTS Lab Help?

We have the capability to evaluate your product for dust and water resistance according to the IEC 60529 standard for ingress protection. To achieve compliance to common standards or NEMA classifications, products must demonstrate an acceptable level of ingress protection. IP ratings are also often required by sellers or retailers before a product is purchased from manufacturers and resold to consumers, regardless of a product’s intent to protect against dust or water.
