What Is IP Testing (Ingress Protection Testing as per IEC 60529)?
Ingress Protection (IP) Testing is a standard (IEC 60529) for classifying the degree of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects (including body parts like hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water in electrical equipment. IP ratings are assigned to equipment in the form of two-digit codes (e.g. IP67), with the first digit indicating the level of protection against solid objects and the second digit indicating the level of protection against liquids. Megalab specializes in all testing required for IP & NEMA type ratings.
What Products Need to Be Protected Against Ingress?
According to IEC 60529, the IP (Ingress Protection) rating system can be used to test a wide range of electrical and electronic products, including but not limited to:
- Lighting fixtures
- Electrical switches and sockets
- Electrical enclosures
- Control panels
- Industrial equipment
- Consumer electronics
- Power tools
- Medical equipment
- Telecommunication equipment
- Computing and data storage equipment.
IP rating tests the level of protection provided against the ingress of solid objects (e.g. dust) and liquids (e.g. water) into the equipment.
How can Megalab Lab Help?
We have the capability to evaluate your product for dust and water resistance according to the IEC 60529 standard for ingress protection. To achieve compliance to common standards or NEMA classifications, products must demonstrate an acceptable level of ingress protection. IP ratings are also often required by sellers or retailers before a product is purchased from manufacturers and resold to consumers, regardless of a product’s intent to protect against dust or water.
